Escape rooms are not a new concept at this point - a room where you are locked in with a group of people and you need to solve puzzles and riddles in order to get out in under a certain amount of time. Pretty basic concept with an intriguing twist. Unsurprisingly, people have taken this concept and run with it, coming up with new and intersecting ideas and ways to keep people guessing and on their toes.
However, it is not just the gamemasters that have taken to these rooms. Part of the reason these rooms have been able to stick around so well is the challenge they inspire and the drive to keep getting better and better at them. The competitive nature of people has made escape rooms into a borderline sport of what group can get out of there the fastest.
This begs the question though, what skills do these successful escape room goers have that allow them to escape faster than others? Are these skills something you can acquire, or are they something you are born with?
Listed here are 4 top traits of successful escape rooms goers and how these skills can even help you outside of the rooms!
Number 1: Critical Thinking
Teamwork makes the dream work! When going into an escape room, you are never alone and having strong teamwork skills always helps. The good news is, that you always have to enter a room with a team, this way, you are never alone.
Escape rooms are all about expanding your mind and getting you out of your comfort zone. You will have to look for things that you usually would not and think in ways you are not used to. From finding hidden clues, to solving puzzles, your brian is gonna be thinking and working in ways it usually doesn’t.
If this seems daunting to you, don’t let it. Being inside an escape room, it encourages you to think in ways you might not have before, critically, creatively, strategically, and more! Plus, they do it in a way that is fun.
Having good critical thinking skills can take you a long way, both in escape rooms and in life. Already having them is a real skill, but even if you do not innately have them, that does not mean you cannot develop and practice them.

Number 2: Good Teamwork Skills
Teamwork makes the dream work! When going into an escape room, you are never alone and having strong teamwork skills always helps. The good news is, that you always have to enter a room with a team, this way, you are never alone.
Every person in your group is gonna have a different set of skills that might help you solve whatever puzzles are thrown your way. One person might be really good at shooting down enemies, while the other person solves a word puzzle. You might need one person who is arranging shapes while another is looking for the other clues. You never know what you might need until you are in there!
Knowing each teammate’s strengths and weaknesses also helps: maybe someone is really good at noticing clues or hidden objects, while another is really good at aiming. Knowing these things can help you strategize and formulate a plan on escaping!
Escape rooms are great for team bonding, whether it’s with coworkers, friends, or family. If you’re planning a special outing or team-building activity, consider booking a private party or corporate event with us!
Now, this also comes with the added skill of being a good teammate - listening to the others, taking in their ideas, but also making yourself heard when needed. Which brings us nicely to our next trait…
Number 3: Communication Skills
Communication is a lot harder than people realize, but it really is the key to making sure the ship runs smoothly. Or in this case, getting you out of a locked room.
While good communication is part of good teamwork, we feel like it is also an important factor in itself. Both in and out of the escape room.
You cannot be in two places at the same time, and effectively communicating with your teammates will really help you escape your room and make the experience all the more enjoyable.
What if your group gets separated? Or only one person has a certain clue that the others cannot see? You are gonna have to effectively communicate to your team what you see and what it might mean.
It is very easy to get your words mixed up, especially in stressful situations. Knowing how to effectively communicate your thoughts and words in a stressful environment is a true skill, but one that is incredibly valuable. It is definitely a learned and practiced skill.
Remember: there is no “I” in team or escape! Calm communication and good, effective teamwork can go a long way in any situation.

Number 4: A Positive Attitude
Just have fun! That’s what escape rooms are all about! If you go into a locked room with a negative attitude, where is that gonna get you?
Seriously though, it can be really easy to get discouraged in an escape room, how can it not be! But that is not the point of it! You are not here to lose hope or stay trapped there - you are here to have fun and bond with your teammates!
Having a positive attitude can really go a long way, especially with your teammates. One Debbie-downer can bring down the whole mood. If you keep a positive attitude, the better the odds of your teammates keeping one as well!
And remember, if you ever do need help, the Gamemaster is always there, watching and waiting for the moment you say “We need a clue!”. If you need a pick me up, just call out!
Conclusion!
Having a successful escape room visit involves a lot of factors, most of which you probably already have! Out of the four traits listed, everyone has at least one of these. And if not, it is never too late to learn and practice them.
Most of these are skills many of us use in our everyday lives, often without realizing it! Like when you cannot find something and you retrace your steps until you do. Or when you collaborate with a friend or classmate on a school project. You don’t need to be a genius to be good at escape rooms, just the ability to think, be a good teammate, communicate well and have a good time!
HEscape rooms are made to be fun, not a torture chamber. They are made for you to leave, to be successful. If you put your mind to it, you can conquer it!
